Superbolt Tensioners on a Four Post Forging Press

PROBLEM: In the midst of rebuilding the smaller of the two presses on site, the larger (and only operating) press broke a column. This resulted in a company-wide production stand-still.
The original column had an 8” diameter thread. The leadtime for a replacement column and subsequent rebuild would leave both presses inoperable for 6-12 months. Superbolt® provided a quick and easy solution that would enable the press to continue production until the small press rebuild was complete.
SOLUTION: The contractor who was hired to perform the rebuild shortened the column below the cracked thread, then drilled and tapped a 4” – 8 tpi thread on top of the shortened column. A 4” Superbolt® Tensioner provided enough preload that the press was up and running in a short period of time. Superbolt® manufactured a complete assembly which included the Multi-Jackbolt tensioner (CY-400-8/W), as well as a new 4” stud and a bridge piece which straddled the larger diameter of the existing column.
With this quick fix in place, the customer was able to continue operations. Once the smaller press rebuild is completed, this press will then undergo a rebuild as well with new columns utilizing Superbolt® tensioners.
